Front garden ideasParterres work well in a front garden. Formal and often designed with an eye to the architectural details of the house facade. They provide elegant shapes of clipped evergreen to create beds for seasonal flowers. Some planned for colour, scent, berries. Strong rectangles of box surround mediterranean plants – greens, silvers and purples. Olives link with front door for colour and box rectangles link with checkerboard of a tessellated path. |
Knot gardenHere box hedging is lined with textural contrast of lime saxifrage, ivory chippings and timber edging. Simple white roses with long flowering season and autumn hips have a loose shape. These compliment the mature large box spheres and the established mature pyracantha against the house. |
TopiaryDiagonal lines of box surround alliums and agapanthus, caryopteris and lavender using greens, pinks and blues. This choice of plants gives a changing scene throughout the year. The red tinged photinias link with the iroko party fence and Victorian brickwork. Although evergreen, their fresh red growth in spring is welcome. They also provide height but their open branches do not cast too much shade – a helpful attribute when planting at different heights. |
